This
part of the site is dedicated to locating Thomas Flood and
Bridget McGovern. Some of their children, Margaret,
Catherine and Eliza (Lizzie) Flood
immigrated from Ireland to the United States to
Brooklyn, New York. We believe that their son was Patrick,
born November 1844, came to the U.S. in 1866, who is my
great-great-grandfather. Mary Agatha Flood Maiara's
recollection is that
Eliza and Patrick were siblings, and that is the family lore, although I have found no documented
proof of that. Interestingly, my grandfather John F. Flood is
buried in Eliza's plot at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn. This would mean that Margaret and Catherine are
also, and we had no knowledge of them until I received marriage
records that showed common parents. We have not yet found either
their Irish place of origin or their entry into the U.S. One
family rumor has it that 11 of this family all entered the Port of
New York in their own boat The original family historian &
genealogist was Reverend Francis Xavier Flood, Society of Jesus, and
much of the work compiling this history was done by Father Frank.
As of
this writing, we have not yet located any definite records as to
Thomas Flood and Bridget McGovern. The only clue we have is
from Pauline Flood (no known relation) of the Genealogy Centre in
Longford City that there was a Thomas Flood married to Bridget
McGovern (MacGovern/Mc
Gauran/
MacGauran)
on
September 6,
1833 in the
Civil Parish
of Forgney,
Catholic
Parish of Moyvore
(which crosses the border and is in both Longford and WestMeath).
The following children
were found;

However, Pauline
states that these records were from the
Parish of Tang, but
listed Moyvore as place of birth. After looking at the Catholic
Parish maps, it seems that Tang is in the Westmeath part of the RC
Parish of Drumraney. (see Maps)
